Stepping onto the field to referee your first MLS Next game is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.
But let me tell you, from one referee to another, you've got this!
Here's a 6-step checklist to ensure you're well-prepared and confident.
1. Mindset is Key
First and foremost, give yourself a pat on the back. This is a big deal! But remember, at its core, it's still a youth match. The players might be more skilled, but in many ways, their behavior is also often better than in regular club games. In my opinion, I believe this can be attributed to the high behavioral standards set by MLS Next clubs and coaches.
So, take a deep breath and trust your training.
Tip: Stay calm and confident. If you demonstrate your expertise, players and coaches will respect your decisions.
2. Understand the Pace
The skill level in MLS Next is a notch above. Players move faster, think quicker, and their game strategies are more refined. But here's a piece of good advice I received: be ready to hold back with your whistle. These players want to play through contact and see how the play develops. What you'd typically call in a local youth league might be different here. I find I often use the whistle less in MLS-Next games than in other youth games.
Tip: Let the play develop. These kids are trained to handle contact and often prefer it to constant stoppages.
3. Get Familiar with Procedures
Yes, you’ve probably heard this, and it’s true. In an MLS Next game, there is more paperwork and you'll need to arrive earlier. But the procedures, in essence, remain the same.
Familiarize yourself with the Mod11 website for check-ins and post-game reporting. Mod11 is the official platform for MLS NEXT competition management.

Tip: Bookmark the MLS Safety and Wellbeing Policy for easy access. This Policy sets forth rules, minimum standards, and procedures for MLS NEXT and for its Members regarding the safety and wellbeing of MLS NEXT Participants. The policy also contains a list of banned terms that you will need to be familiar with before you referee an MLS Next game.
4. Know the Rules
Different age groups have different sub rules. For instance, U13/14 has 3 moments per half with no re-entry, while U15 and older have 3 moments per game.
Tip: Keep a cheat sheet. It's handy, especially when you're just starting out with MLS Next games.
5. Engage with Coaches and Players
While players are often more focused and less likely to complain, coaches in MLS Next are intensely passionate. They're pursuing coaching at a professional or semi-professional level. They'll be vocal, but you should stand your ground. Confidence is key. And remember, fans will be fans. Take their cheers and jeers in stride.
Tip: Build rapport with coaches before the game. A simple chat can set a positive tone for the match.
6. Arrive Prepared
The guidelines might say to arrive an hour before the MLS Next match, but local practices can vary. Confirm with your assignor exactly how early you should arrive. Regardless, ensure you're there with ample time to prep and relax.
Tip: Use the extra time to observe the teams, gauge their strategies, and even chat with fellow referees.
Refereeing an MLS Next game is a fantastic experience. It's a step up, but with the right preparation, you'll not only succeed but truly enjoy the game. Remember, every match is a learning opportunity. Embrace it, enjoy the journey, and most importantly, have fun out there!
