Seeing Red: How Referees Can Navigate Giving Red Cards to Youth Players
Carding youth soccer players can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield.
Drawing from my own experience, I remember a game where two under-12 boys were at the heart of an escalating conflict. One hurled a derogatory remark, and the other retaliated physically. As the situation heated up, I had to make a tough call and gave both of them straight red cards. This decision wasn't taken lightly, but I felt it was necessary in that situation.
Based on my encounters and learnings, here are three main guidelines I believe every referee should consider.
1. Emphasizing Communication Over Surprise
My philosophy is simple: carding shouldn't ambush anyone on the field. Before reaching for my pocket, I ensure that there's open communication with the coach, when the players are young. By informing the coach of a possible card, it allows for both the referee and coach to work collaboratively to better manage on-field behavior. For instance, in situations where a yellow card seems imminent, I've found that discussing it with the coach can lead to proactive measures, diffusing potential flare-ups.
2. Every Action Within Context
The world of youth soccer is diverse; players vary in age, maturity, and understanding of the game. Reflecting on that intense under-12 game, it was evident that emotions ran high, and the actions stemmed more from heated moments rather than calculated intentions. It taught me that as a referee, we need to interpret actions within the context of the player's age and experience. This doesn't mean letting foul play slide but tailoring our response to ensure the player learns without feeling alienated.
3. Preserve the Game's Integrity, Always
While empathy is paramount, there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, regardless of age. Upholding the integrity of the game is non-negotiable. Severe misconduct, be it violent conduct or derogatory remarks, demands a card. After issuing a card for a serious offense, I make it a point to explain the reason behind my decision to the coach, particularly when the players are under 12. It’s a stark reminder for all involved: while soccer is a learning journey, safety and respect are foundational pillars.
In my years as a referee, I've come to understand that our role transcends just implementing the rules. We are educators, mentors, and sometimes, the bearers of hard lessons. Every game offers unique challenges, but with empathy, understanding, and unwavering commitment to the sport's spirit, we can shape a brighter future for these young soccer enthusiasts.
Before you leave, give these write-on, wipe-away cards a shot. I crafted them myself and truly believe they stand out as the best in the market.
